DANCE OUT! Transports Exceptionnels

  What: Transports Exceptionnels is a unique and whimsical outdoor duet between man and five-ton mechanical digger. Choreographed by Dominique Boivin and accompanied by the dramatic voice of Maria Callas, the dancer meets, greets, and embraces a moving excavator, transforming the stage into a construction site, street into playground, and dance into a tentative balance between nature, man, and machine.

Savvy Cyclist by Bike New York

  What: Savvy Cyclist is a free, one-day "introduction to cycling" program for adults and mature teens who want to improve their cycling skills. This class is ideal for new cyclists who want to learn the basics, those returning to cycling from a long hiatus, people who want to be more independent on their bike, and those who feel a little nervous while cycling in traffic.

If you do not know how to ride a bike (that is, start, stop, balance and steer without falling down), this is not the right class for you. Participants must know how to balance and control a bicycle.

When: Saturday, July 19th, 9am-5pm.
Upcoming Dates: 8/9, 8/23, 9/13, 9/20
Where: Recycle-A-Bicycle training center at the corner of 46 Avenue and 5th Street.
Registration: Savvy Cyclist class is free, but pre-registration and a fully refundable $20 deposit* are required to secure your spot. The registration form can be found on the link listed below. More about the Park: Socrates Sculpture Park is dedicated to providing artists with the opportunity to create and exhibit large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations in a unique outdoor environment that encourages interaction between artists, artworks and the public. The Park is open 365 days a year from 10 am to sunset and is located at the intersection of Broadway and Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City, New York.

Directions: Monday through Friday take the N or W trains to the Broadway stop in Queens and walk eight blocks along Broadway toward the East River. Paddle by Canoe or Kayak in the Cove!

Volunteers are also needed to help clean up the beach while waiting for their turn to paddle!

This event will be ongoing every Sunday from May 18th through October 12th 1-4pm.
Where: Socrates Sculpture Park's beach at Hallets Cove. 31st Avenue at Vernon Blvd.
Who: All are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by a guardian.

DANCE OUT! Dans le Jardin

147959951e5d32552c62c6bd5734a63d.jpg What: Dans le Jardin an improvised dance by the Netherlands-based choreographer Michael Schumacher, is set to live music performed by cellist and composer Alex Waterman. Using the park as a backdrop and inspiration for his improvised performance, Michael dances with and around his surroundings. Partnering with a statue, moving gracefully under a tree or exploding across a green; the park, music and audience play equal parts as inspiration and observers for this improvised performance.

Greater Astoria Historical Society Lecture: Beer Gardens of Queens

Films selected by Chief Curator David Schwartz and Assistant Curator Livia Bloom, Museum of the Moving Image.

* July 23: Chop Shop
Introduced by director Ramin Bahrani. US, 2007, 84 mins. Directed by Ramin Bahrani. With Alejandro Polanco, Isamar Gonzalez. A deeply affecting slice of urban neorealism, this Queens-made film, set in the Willets Point 窶廬ron Triangle窶・near Shea Stadium, follows a 12-year-old orphan who ekes out an existence with his teenaged sister.

*July 30: The Host
South Korea, 2006, 119 mins. Rated R. Directed by Bong Joon-ho. With Song Kang-ho, Bae Doo-na. This satirical monster/horror movie about a rampaging mutant lizard who captures a young girl, The Host is Korea's biggest box-office hit to date. It is great fun窶ヲand a timely spoof of rampant militarism and environmental recklessness.

*August 6: The Red Balloon + Persepolis
France. A young boy and a red balloon wander through the streets of Paris in The Red Balloon (1956, 34 mins., Directed by Albert Lamorisse), one of the most beloved children窶冱 films ever made. Persepolis(2007, 95 mins. Directed by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi) is a coming-of-age tale about an Iranian girl窶冱 struggles with love, religion, and politics, based on Marjane Satrapi窶冱 popular graphic novel/memoir.

*August 13: Fellini's 8 1/2
Italy, 1963, 138 mins. Directed by Federico Fellini. With Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale, Anouk Aimテゥe. Fellini's stunning, romantic autobiographical fantasy is a self-portrait of the filmmaker as a circus ringmaster. It is also one of the landmarks in contemporary world cinema.

*August 20: Duck Season
Mexico, 2006, 85 mins. Directed by Fernando Eimbcke. With Enrique Arreola, Diego Cataテアo, Danny Perea. A lovely neighbor distracts two teen friends from their Bush vs. Bin Laden video game in this charming chronicle of adolescent life, a surprise indie gem from Mexico.
